Quilts
Mason Methodist Quilters
The unspoken Heroes of our church are the quilters.
They meet on Wednesday afternoons at the church to cut, pin, and prep quilts to be sewn at their homes, and when finished given to hundreds in need each year.
They make 4 different types & sizes of quilts:
- 40”x70” (or larger if called for.)
- 55”x85”
- 38”x46”
- Doll Blankets
The 40X70 inch quilts are for men and women at the Porter House, a 98 unit low-income housing located downtown Lansing. They currently are working on 65 men’s quilts and 35 women’s quilts. These blankets offer more than warmth; it offers hope, comfort, and the thought of someone cared enough to make them a blanket.
The 55×85 inch blankets are made for women and their children at the Maplewood Center. This is a home for women to get help with:
- Shelter
- Food
- Clothing
- Treatment
This is a transitional housing program to help women get back on their feet. The blankets provide a sense of home and hope to each of them.
The 38×46 inch (or larger if you want) are made for babies in Urgent Care in the Lansing area. And the Mason Quilters also donate quilts to the Children Closet, which helps many children in the area. They also welcome newborn babies within our church family with a quilt too.
The smallest of quilts are the doll quilts, which the Mason Quilters make for the Salvation Army to be given out at Christmas with dolls.
On top of making quilts for these great organizations, the quilters recently completed over 300 quilts for US Soldiers to take with them as they departed to Afghanistan. Each hand made quilt was beautifully made with red, white, and blue fabric giving them each a little piece of home to take with them.
Each quilt is hand cut and sewn together and then lined with a warm, soft liner and coordinated backing. Stitched again and tied to last for years of use and comfort.
This remarkable group of women have been making quilts for many years at Mason First United Methodist Church. They enjoy the many hours of conversation (about everything!), and have created lasting friendships. However, they need your help! They need more heroes!
If you are interested in helping, please contact the church. You do not need to be a seamstress nor know how to quilt. You can learn the process or help in some other way. All it takes is some time and a passion to help others.
If you would like to join the quilters, please contact the church for details today. 517-676-9449

At Mason First United Methodist Church we seek to be a caring community of faith. We prioritize hospitality and offering a welcome to everyone who comes through our doors. Each week in worship people are greeted as brothers and sisters in Christ. That’s more than just a ritual for us, it’s a sign that we are all part of the family of God. Reaching Out
Mason First United Methodist church is committed to extending the reach of God’s love through offering financial support, material assistance and hands on service.
We partner with the United Methodist Church on national, international and regional projects. Our church also joins hands with local community organizations to offer support to people closer to home. Some of our outreach efforts are described below…
- Water for Life – UMCOR – is supported through our Change for Change Offering – a loose change offering collected in those months with 5 Sundays, on the 5th Sunday. Our pennies, dimes and dollars provide for the construction of wells to provide clean water and toilets to improve the living standards in communities in post-war Liberia.
- Lake Louise Camp – a group works on needs around the camp every year.
- Tiny Pantry – Our Tiny Pantry is located at the circle drive of the church. Non-perishable food items can be placed there year round to meet the needs of people who find themselves short of food at any time.
